The New Materialist Research Group (NMRG) presented An Elastic Continuum, an international exhibition and symposium at S1 Artspace, curated by NMRG co-leads Dr. Rebecca Howard and Dr. Victoria Sharples. Featuring the work of Simon Carter, Sinéad Kempley, Victoria Lucas, Grace Clifford, Lucy Vann, Craig Fisher, Rebecca Howard, Emily Speed, Victoria Sharples, Rachel Stanley, Nathan Walker, Helen Hamilton, Henriette von Münchhausen, Ellie Barrett, Bethan Hughes, Rose Hedy Squires, and Stephanie Rushton, the exhibition explored the proposition of ‘skin’ as an interface for material, spatial, and bodily relations.
Through expansive readings of ‘skin’ - as surface, structure, organ, and material - the participating artists examined architectures of protection and exposure, the porous boundaries between human, animal, and plant bodies, and the sensorial intersections of the biological and built. An Elastic Continuum offered a rich site of dialogue across art, research, and curatorial practice.
