Since founding NMRG, we have facilitated a reading group that brings together academics, researchers, technicians, students, and members of the public to slow read and discuss key texts in new materialist theory: a field that rethinks the relationships between matter, agency, and meaning. The group provides a space for shared reflection, fostering discussion and critical insight into how new materialist perspectives inform art, research, and curatorial practice.
Texts include:
Materials against Materiality by Tim Ingold (2021)
Cinema as Second Skin by Tarja Laine (2006)
Memory as Architecture, Memory as Skin by Heidi Buscher
Thing Theory by Bill Brown (2001)
Who's Afraid of the In-Between by Jens Hauser (2008)
Speculative Realism: The Human and Non-Human Divide by Brian Willems (2020)
Placing and Tracing Absence: A Material Culture of the Immaterial by Morgan Meyer (2012)
